Summer road trips have a way of separating capable vehicles from ones that almost work. Long stretches of highway, fully loaded cargo areas, backseat passengers who need space, and the occasional detour down an unpaved road — these are the real tests. Volkswagen's 2026 lineup covers a wide range of road trip scenarios, from two-person escapes to multi-generational family hauls.
This guide highlights the models in the VW Canada lineup that are best suited for summer travel and what each one brings to a long-distance drive.
For families who need every seat filled and still want cargo room, the Atlas is the most practical road trip vehicle in the lineup. Seven passengers, 2,735 L of cargo space with seats folded, and a towing capacity of 5,000 lbs (2,268 kg) for families who bring a trailer or boat along for the summer.
The Atlas runs a 2.0 L 4-cylinder TSI engine producing 269 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque, with 4MOTION AWD standard across all trims. The IQ.DRIVE suite — which includes Travel Assist with Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Assist, and Emergency Assist — is standard, making long highway runs more relaxed for the driver. The 2026 Atlas also earned a 2025 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award.
Road trip strengths:
Travelling with a group of five and hauling a trailer? The Atlas Cross Sport delivers the same 269 hp, the same 4MOTION AWD, and the same 5,000 lbs (2,268 kg) towing rating as the full Atlas — in a sleeker two-row body. Cargo behind the second row comes to 2,197 L with seats folded, and fuel economy improves slightly to 10.7 L/100 km combined versus the Atlas's 11.0 L/100 km.
For smaller families or couples who regularly travel with a camper trailer or kayak carrier, the Cross Sport's combination of towing capacity and more compact proportions makes for efficient road trip geometry.
The Tiguan is the right road trip vehicle for families who don't need seven seats but want a versatile, AWD-equipped compact SUV with an excellent technology package. With 1,668 L of cargo space (seats folded) and 4MOTION AWD standard across all trims, the Tiguan handles a full load of luggage without issue.
The Highline Turbo R-Line 4MOTION is the standout configuration for road trips: 268 hp and 258 lb-ft from the upgraded 2.0 L 4-cylinder TSI engine, a 15" touchscreen, Harman Kardon audio, three-zone climate control with rear controls, and a Head-Up Display. The Trendline and Comfortline trims offer 201 hp, 12.9" infotainment, Travel Assist, and wireless App-Connect as standard — all useful on long drives.
The Taos is the most fuel-efficient SUV in the VW lineup, with the front-wheel drive variant rated at 7.4 L/100 km combined. Its 1.5 L 4-cylinder TSI engine produces 174 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque — modest figures by larger-SUV standards, but well matched to a vehicle that weighs significantly less. The Taos is a strong pick for two-person trips or couples with younger children who want a smaller footprint and lower fuel costs on a long drive.
4MOTION AWD is available on Trendline, Comfortline, and Highline trims for those who want it. With 1,866 L of cargo space seats-folded, it carries more than the numbers might suggest.
For drivers who prefer a sedan over an SUV, the Jetta's 7.4 L/100 km combined rating makes it one of the most economical vehicles for long-distance road trips in the lineup. The Highline adds Travel Assist, ventilated front seats, satellite navigation, and an 18" wheel upgrade — features that translate directly into comfort on extended drives. With 405 L of trunk space, the Jetta fits the luggage of two to three passengers without difficulty.
Not every road trip calls for space — some call for fun. The Golf GTI pairs a 2.0 L 4-cylinder TSI engine producing 241 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque with a 7-speed DSG transmission and a VAQ limited-slip differential for strong cornering grip. With 977 L of cargo space (seats folded) in its hatchback body, the GTI accommodates a weekend's worth of gear for two.
Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go, a 12.9" touchscreen, wireless App-Connect, and satellite navigation are all standard. The Autobahn trim adds Dynamic Chassis Control adaptive damping, a Harman Kardon audio system, and a Head-Up Display.
For families who want an all-electric road trip experience with serious space, the ID. Buzz offers up to seven seats, 282 hp (RWD) or 335 hp (AWD), and a driving range of up to 377 km on a full charge. DC fast charging at up to 200 kW means the Buzz can accept approximately 130 km of range in about 10 minutes at a compatible charger.
With a 12.9" infotainment touchscreen, Harman Kardon audio, 30-colour ambient lighting, and three-zone climate control standard, the ID. Buzz is fully equipped for long-distance comfort. The power sliding rear doors, removable third row, and massive maximum cargo volume make it uniquely practical for larger summer travel needs.
