The Tiguan is the best-selling Volkswagen in the world, and now its name is going electric. Volkswagen has revealed the new ID. Tiguan, a mid-size all-electric SUV that takes over from the ID.4. Its European launch is set for early 2027.
The ID. Tiguan rides on Volkswagen’s MEB+ electric platform and is built in Emden, Germany. It brings a bolder SUV shape, a fresh cabin with physical buttons, up to 600 km of range on the European WLTP test cycle and up to 4,409 lbs (2,000 kg) of towing capacity. Here is a closer look at what Volkswagen showed.
Volkswagen picked this name for a clear reason. The Tiguan is the brand’s top seller worldwide, and the ID.4 is one of its most successful electric vehicles. Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer says the new model brings “these two success stories together.”
In Europe, the electric ID. Tiguan will be sold alongside the gas-powered Tiguan, which is built in Wolfsburg. For North America, Volkswagen plans for the ID. Tiguan to succeed the ID.4, and the brand will share North American timing, pricing and model details after the European launch.
Volkswagen revealed three versions of the ID. Tiguan. Two send power to the rear wheels, and the top version uses 4MOTION all-wheel drive.
Range on the European WLTP cycle reaches up to 600 km, depending on the power level and battery size. In Europe, buyers will choose from four equipment levels.
Every ID. Tiguan comes with one-pedal driving as standard. It lets the driver slow the SUV strongly using only the accelerator pedal, which makes stop-and-go traffic simpler to manage.
The ID. Tiguan follows Volkswagen’s Pure Positive design language. The softer crossover shape of the ID.4 gives way to a more upright SUV design with real presence. Crisp lines and tightly sculpted surfaces give the body a solid, high-quality look that Volkswagen compares to a vehicle from the next class up.
One small detail stands out right away. Volkswagen is bringing back classic pull-style door handles on the ID. Tiguan, a simple design that most drivers will recognize instantly.
Volkswagen says customer requests shaped the ID. Tiguan’s development, and the cabin shows it. Physical buttons return for key functions. The climate controls sit on a button bar in the centre console, and a controller in the centre console handles audio volume and changing stations or tracks. The multifunction steering wheel uses physical buttons too.
The screen setup is all new. A 10-inch digital cockpit sits ahead of the driver, and a 15-inch infotainment screen anchors the dash. An available 12-inch co-driver display gives the front passenger a screen of their own for infotainment, information and games. Its privacy mode keeps the screen out of the driver’s view, and the passenger can listen through paired Bluetooth headphones.
For a bit of fun, the ID. Tiguan offers new “Retro” displays. A press of the “View” button on the steering wheel brings up the blue and red gauges from the Golf IV in the digital cockpit.
The Tiguan name has always stood for practical family transportation, and the electric version keeps that promise.
Available extras add even more day-to-day value. The PowerSocket adapter plugs into the charging port and turns the ID. Tiguan into a power source for devices like an electric grill or an e-bike. The available Digital Key lets a compatible smartphone lock, unlock and start the SUV, and it can be shared with family, friends or coworkers through the Volkswagen app.
Volkswagen also listed several comfort features on the options list. These include power front seats with massage, memory and ventilation, a 480-watt Harman Kardon sound system and a panoramic sunroof. Two available Qi2 wireless charging pads use magnetic rings to hold compatible phones in place.
The available Connected Travel Assist can help with lane changes on highways and can bring the ID. Tiguan to a stop at red traffic lights. These functions work within system limits, and the driver always remains responsible.
