Are Your Tires Ready for Winter? Understanding B.C.’s Winter Tire Requirements
North Vancouver, BC — With temperatures dropping across the North Shore, it's time to start thinking about winter driving and whether your vehicle is properly equipped for the months ahead.
One question that comes up every year is whether winter tires are actually required in British Columbia. The answer depends on where you're driving.
Winter tires are not mandatory on every road in B.C. However, they are required on designated routes throughout the province from October 1, with requirements continuing until March 31 or April 30, depending on the highway.
For North Shore drivers, this is particularly important if you're planning a trip along Highway 99 toward Squamish or Whistler. Sections of the Sea-to-Sky Highway are designated winter tire routes, and drivers must have the appropriate tires when travelling beyond the posted signs.
Not all tires offer the same level of performance in winter conditions. Understanding the difference between the two recognized tire markings can help you make a more informed decision.
M+S (Mud and Snow) Tires
Tires marked M+S meet B.C.'s minimum legal winter tire requirement on designated routes, provided they have at least 3.5 millimetres of tread depth.
Many all-season tires carry this marking. While they meet the minimum requirement, they may not provide the same level of traction as dedicated winter tires in more challenging conditions.
Mountain Snowflake Tires
Look for the three-peaked mountain and snowflake symbol on the tire's sidewall. These tires meet a specific performance standard for snow traction and are recommended for drivers who regularly encounter snow, ice, and colder winter conditions.
If you frequently travel the Sea-to-Sky corridor or head toward Whistler during the winter, mountain snowflake tires are worth considering.
Even if most of your driving happens around North Vancouver, West Vancouver, or the surrounding Lower Mainland, colder temperatures can affect your vehicle's tires and overall performance.
Before winter arrives, take a moment to check:
Tire tread depth: Make sure your tires have sufficient tread remaining. B.C.'s minimum legal requirement for designated winter routes is 3.5 mm.
Tire pressure: Colder temperatures can cause tire pressure to drop. Check your pressure regularly and follow the recommended PSI listed on your vehicle's tire information label.
Tire condition: Look for uneven wear, cracks, bulges, or other visible signs of damage.
Seasonal tire changeover: If your driving habits or regular routes require dedicated winter tires, arrange your seasonal changeover before the busy winter season.
Winter driving preparation starts before the first snowfall. Whether you're commuting around the North Shore or planning weekend trips toward the mountains, having the right tires and making sure they're in good condition can make a meaningful difference in how your vehicle handles winter roads.
Not sure whether your current tires are ready for the season? The Capilano Volkswagen Service Department can help you check your tire condition and discuss your winter tire options.
