Shopping for a new SUV in British Columbia usually means weighing a long list of driver-assistance acronyms against each other. The 2026 Volkswagen Tiguan bundles its safety and convenience tech under one name, IQ.DRIVE, so it is worth breaking down what is actually included and what changes by trim.
This is not a full trim-by-trim price comparison. It is a plain-language look at the assistance suite itself, so you know what to ask about on your visit.
IQ.DRIVE is Volkswagen’s name for the Tiguan’s bundle of driver-assistance systems. It covers three broad jobs: keeping the driver aware of what is around the vehicle, helping maintain safe following distance and lane position, and supporting tighter manoeuvres like parking.
The core pieces, Travel Assist, Front Assist, and Side Assist, are included across the Tiguan lineup. A smaller group of features, including the 360-degree camera, Head-Up Display, and assisted parking, are standard specifically on the Highline Turbo R-Line 4MOTION trim. None of this is full self-driving; every system still expects an attentive driver behind the wheel.
Travel Assist combines Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go and Lane Assist. In practice, the vehicle manages following distance in traffic, including a full stop and re-start, while helping keep the Tiguan centred in its lane on the highway.
Front Assist adds Forward Collision Warning and Automatic Emergency Braking, with monitoring built specifically for pedestrians and cyclists, which matters most at intersections and in mixed traffic.
Side Assist rounds out the awareness picture. It combines Active Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Traffic Alert, and an exit warning system that flags an opening door if a cyclist or vehicle is approaching from behind. Emergency Assist can bring the vehicle toward a stop if the driver becomes unresponsive.
On the lighting side, Light Assist automatically switches between high and low beams, and the Tiguan’s LED headlights use an adaptive front-lighting system that adjusts the beam pattern for the road ahead. On the Highline Turbo R-Line 4MOTION, that extends to dynamic cornering lights, which sweep with the steering angle in poor-weather conditions.
For parking, every Tiguan includes front and rear Park Distance Control sensors and a rearview camera with dynamic guidance lines. The Highline Turbo R-Line 4MOTION adds assisted parking and a 360-degree area view camera for tighter spaces.
Much of this suite is built for exactly the driving British Columbia commuters deal with daily: stop-and-go congestion, merges onto fast-moving highways, and crowded parking lots at malls and transit hubs.
Travel Assist’s Stop & Go function takes the edge off repeated braking and accelerating in slow traffic. Front Assist’s pedestrian and cyclist monitoring is relevant anywhere foot and bike traffic mixes with vehicles, which describes most urban and suburban BC streets.
Longer trips benefit too. Lane Assist reduces the small corrections a driver makes over hours on the highway, and the exit warning function adds a layer of protection when parked curbside in a busy area.
Commuters doing stop-and-go runs will lean on Travel Assist and Front Assist the most. Families cross-shopping SUVs for safety reasons will want the full Side Assist picture: blind spot, rear cross-traffic, and exit warning working together.
First-time SUV buyers unfamiliar with larger vehicles often value the parking-focused features most, since a 360-degree camera and assisted parking take some of the guesswork out of tight spaces. Buyers who spend a lot of time in the vehicle after dark will notice Light Assist and the adaptive lighting system more than most other IQ.DRIVE pieces.

The core of IQ.DRIVE, collision warning, blind spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise, is included from the base Trendline trim up, so it is not something you have to pay your way into. The parking-focused extras on the Highline Turbo R-Line 4MOTION are a genuine convenience upgrade rather than a safety gap on lower trims.
For most shoppers, that means IQ.DRIVE’s safety layer is a given across the lineup, and the decision comes down to how much you value the added parking and lighting tech on the top trim.
Drivers should still confirm exactly which IQ.DRIVE features come with the specific Tiguan trim they are considering, since equipment can shift between model years.
